Ocean-bound plastic

Plastic Bank operates under the global standard defined by Jenna Jambeck. Ocean-bound plastic is defined as plastic that has not yet found its way into the ocean but is classified as "mismanaged waste". That is, plastic that is not being (formally) collected, is not likely to be collected, and is found within 50km of an ocean-bound waterway or coastal area.

Community Members

Individuals within a recycling community who collect plastic and exchange it at a Plastic Bank collection branch for secure income and life-improving benefits.

Equivalent Bottles Stopped

The amount of ocean-bound plastic collected and recycled in our recycling communities converted into bottles. Conversion rate is 50 bottles per kg (the average weight of a 500mL bottle is ~20g)

Recycling Communities

Community of plastic collectors living within 50 kilometres of ocean-bound waterways involved in plastic collection and its exchange at Plastic Bank collection points.

Alchemy

Alchemy is the blockchain platform that powers the Plastic Bank app. It enables fully traceable recycling processes, secures income for recycling community members and tailors impact reports for our stewards.

Plastic Bank’s Partnership with Aquage

Inspired by the ocean, Aquage® is honoring its roots and committing to “sea-stainability”

Aquage® offers luxurious professional hair care infused with rich nutrients from the sea. Through its partnership with Plastic Bank, Aquage® aims to preserve the source and inspiration of its products by stopping ocean plastic and improving the lives of those collecting it.

A portion of every Aquage® sale will prevent 50 tons (the equivalent of 2.5 million plastic bottles) from entering the ocean across all of our coastal community ecosystems. This partnership is an example of how Aquage® is supporting sustainability and conservation efforts. The below figures reflect the real-time status of plastic collection.

Making waves and impact

Together, every Aquage® sale supports collector communities and prevents plastic from entering our oceans. In exchange for ocean-bound plastic, collectors receive premiums which helps them provide basic family necessities such as groceries, cooking fuel, school tuition, and health insurance. Aquage® is setting a hair care industry standard for environmental, social and economic impact.

“The ocean has always been the inspiration behind our products, and it is our mandate to help preserve and protect it. Our partnership with Plastic Bank will support conservation efforts that make a real difference in saving this precious resource.”
