Plastic credit authenticity criteria

  • Verified collection of one kilogram of traceable plastic with social impact, defined as the positive effect of gathering discarded plastic from the environment on collection communities. Measured by the additional income generated from the collection and the social benefits offered.
  • Authentic traceability from proof of direct social impact to delivery to a recycler or processor, traceable to the funder. This means everything is authentic and traceable end-to-end through a proprietary, blockchain secured, chain of custody audit trail system.
  • Guaranteed digital bonus payment to a recycling transaction, on top of the market rate of plastic, delivered directly to our 18+ age-verified collection member’s digital wallet. (Proof of income)
  • Robust data quality controls for Plastic Credit creation, including AI-assisted automated transaction auditing and verification of blockchain-secured transactions recorded through the Plastic Bank App; verification of processor purchase receipts; completion of an end-to-end plastic chain of custody verification process in which all participants meet our Plastic Credit eligibility requirements and KYC bonus eligibility requirements; and confirmation of bonus payments made directly through our digital wallet system as proof of social impact.
  • Uniquely assigned (no double counting) transactions, bonus payments, and collection benefits for subscription or one-time plastic credit purchases.

Glossary of terms

Plastic Bank platform

The Plastic Bank platform powers everything we do. It enables our collection bonus programs, plastic credits, supply chain management systems, auditing tools, and partner impact reporting. The platform utilizes a hybrid blockchain system to track and secure every exchange through the PlasticBank® app, which enables traceability, secures income for collection community members, and provides audit-ready impact reporting.

PlasticBank® app

PlasticBank® app is used to record the details of every exchange from our registered collection members to our collection branches, all the way to delivery at the processor partner who recycles and ships the materials for manufacturing.

Collection members and branch owners gain access to their own unique digital wallets through the PlasticBank® app. In these wallets, they can save or redeem the tokens they earn through Plastic Bank’s bonus program.

Certificates

Certificates are digital records showing the quantity of traceable plastic collection attributed to a participant through Plastic Bank programs.

Plastic Bank guarantees collection and provides individual and business subscribers who make online plastic collection credit purchases with impact certificates via their Impact Account. Monthly subscription users will automatically receive a new impact certificate each month, validating impact delivery in real-time.

Collection community member

A registered member of the collection community that gathers discarded plastic from the environment.

Collection benefit

Income and social benefits earned by collection communities, including health, work and life insurance, digital connectivity, grocery vouchers, school supplies, and fintech services.

Collection bonuses

These are digital bonus payments on top of the cash market rate for bonus-eligible plastic. They provide increased incomes, digital savings, and benefits with traceability for our supply chain compliance requirements. The bonuses are paid in digital tokens and funded by partner orders through Plastic Bank’s order assignment system.

Bonuses are calculated using Plastic Bank Tokens and then disbursed to community members, collection points, collection aggregators, and branches, depending on the country’s partner disbursement platform. These include digital wallets and bank account transfers. These bonuses are intended to dignify recycling, provide a living income, influence behaviour change, and improve lives.

Collection branch

A Plastic Bank-certified location where collection community members can verify and exchange their plastic collection. They may also perform preprocessing such as cleaning, sorting, and bailing.

Market value

The price at which buyers and sellers would trade a certain type of plastic in a competitive auction setting.

Order assignment system

Plastic Bank has various auditing features, algorithms, and routines to ensure risk mitigation through data integrity, which is maintained at all times. The order assignment system is used to ensure that only one partner can claim the impact of a recycling transaction. This formalizes the unique partner order ownership for each kilogram collected, its associated bonus payments, and the environmental and social impact claims generated from each exchange.

Plastic credit

The verified assignable value to stop one traceable kilogram of discarded plastic waste, redeemable in local currency. Plastic Bank assigns unique ownership of the entire transaction chain, from the member who collects the plastic to the processor who recycles it. This offers traceability of collection bonuses awarded to members, confirms the availability of material for recycling at our processor partner facilities, and offers proof of social impact. Every transaction has a unique claim ID number that can only be owned by one purchaser. A plastic credit transfers the ownership of that transaction and the associated environmental and social impact.

Processor

A processing facility that recycles gathered plastic into recycled feedstock for reuse in products and packaging.

Plastic Bank tokens

The unit of payment for our digital reward programs is through a digital token in which 1 token has a local redemption value of 0.01 USD. Plastic Bank tokens are paid directly to and stored in a collection community member’s digital wallet. They can only be earned through Plastic Bank collection bonus programs and redeemed through official Plastic Bank redemption partners, integrated e-wallets and partner banks.

Plastic Bank chain

The proprietary system in the Plastic Bank platform that algorithmically links the chain of custody of each kilogram of plastic transacted from the input source to the output source. Every time that plastic is sold, it creates an additional chain in its traceability. A complete chain provides full traceability from the initial collection member to the final processing partner and evidence of compliance to Plastic Bank’s code of conduct requirements that include evidence of no child labour, proof of recycling, and verified social additionality delivered as promised through the bonus program.

Overview

Plastic Bank enables recycling while helping end poverty. Our collection communities exchange discarded plastic as currency for additional income and social benefits. The gathered plastic, which is traceable through the PlasticBank® app, is set up for recycling and integration into the global supply chain.

Plastic Bank offers subscriptions or one-time purchases of Plastic Credits. A Plastic Credit generates revenue that funds social benefits offered to our collection community members.

Through these efforts, Plastic Bank not only addresses the urgent issue of plastic pollution but also fosters a circular economy, supports communities, enables local and regional economic inclusion, and contributes to several SDGs.

Scope

Qualified post-consumer plastic types: Limited to Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET), Polypropylene (PP), High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE), Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE), multi-layer flexible packaging.

Exclusions: Hazardous plastic waste.

Principles

Completeness

Pertinent data in the Plastic Bank chain from the bonus-paid member to an approved processor is captured for the purpose of ensuring and safeguarding accuracy.

Consistency

Best operational practices are consistently executed across all markets through compliance with detailed procedures and toolkits that guide the collection, sorting, and processing of plastic. The methodology provides evidence of ethical practices, including the absence of child labour, and ensures that all stakeholders can trust the integrity and impact of our work.

Accuracy

Plastic Bank’s operations and audit team conducts frequent internal data audits to ensure accuracy and integrity.

Traceability

All transactions are recorded in the PlasticBank® app to allow tracking and traceability.

Transparency

Our traceability system provides transparency into the journey of plastic from collection to processing. All benefits funded by the plastic credits are entered into the Plastic Bank platform, and assigned to the funder using Plastic Bank’s order assignment system. This ensures that the social impact of our programs is visible, verifiable, and transparent to all stakeholders.

Uniqueness / No double counting / No double financing

We leverage blockchain technology to create an immutable record of every recycling transaction. We track the journey of each kilogram of plastic from collection through to a processing partner. Our order assignment system associates the unique ownership of each transaction’s impact claim to the sole buyer of the authenticated Plastic Credit. This ensures that each piece of plastic is accounted for only once. Each transaction has a unique claim ID that prevents the same plastic from being counted more than once.

Additionality

Plastic Bank’s plastic credits are uniquely based on social additionality, which is proof that someone’s life is better because of the plastic credit you purchased. Whenever you see a KG or bottles of impact, this impact promise is delivered through an authenticated plastic credit.

This is achieved by guaranteeing that the collection member who initiated each plastic credit transaction received a bonus payment on top of the market rate of plastic exchanged, funded by personal, professional or enterprise purchases. This collection bonus is delivered directly to the collection members’ digital wallet and is verified and authenticated through Plastic Bank’s blockchain-secured platform.

Conservativeness

We use a conservative count of 50 bottles per KG based on the field testing conducted in our countries of operations. We ensure reporting practices only source authenticated data from the Plastic Bank platform and provide the same claims to our clients and subscribers that never overstate or embellish the social, economic or environmental impact of their contributions. (See more details on our field testing methodology for authentic bottle counts per KG here.)

Safeguards

Given the nature of our operations in areas of high pollution and poverty, we implement a strict Code of Conduct that outlines the ethical and professional standards expected of all Plastic Bank employees, processors, branch owners, and collection community members. Our partner collection branches, aggregators and processors complete Plastic Bank’s Code of Conduct training program, sign the Code of Conduct agreement, and on-site visits and community chat groups are used to monitor compliance with the Code of Conduct.

We support the efforts of organizations that seek to improve working and environmental conditions. Plastic Bank reviewed and considered the principles outlined in recognized standards and guidelines in establishing this code, including:

  • The Global Social Compliance Program Reference Code
  • The International Labor Organization’s 1998 Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work
  • The United Nations’ Global Compact
  • The United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights

No Child Labour Policy

We strictly adhere to our No Child Labour Policy, and ensure that all our collection community members, partners, aggregators, and processors comply with it. All partners must sign a mandatory written commitment to the prevention of Child and Forced Labour.

Feedback and grievance mechanism

We have a structured approach to investigating grievances, involving impartial review and fact-finding. This ensures that grievances are addressed fairly and effectively, with appropriate resolutions offered. We conduct Net Promoter Score Assessments to gather partner feedback for improvements.

Double counting / double financing prevention

We guarantee the uniqueness of each plastic credit and prevent double counting by assigning a unique claim ID number ensuring that only one purchaser can claim the environmental and social impacts associated with that transaction based on the final destination of the material, which is tracked from input to output. Our use of blockchain technology provides an immutable record of each transaction, preventing any possibility of double counting. Our platform assigns the unique claim ID of these transactions to our plastic credits. Only one business entity or individual can own a claim ID.

Additional policies:

Methodology

Order generation and fulfillment

A unique order ID, standardized name, and other traceability details are created for an order. The order is then assigned to the source country and a secured collection volume is tagged to the order. The order volume triggers a collection bonus and this begins the order fulfillment process. Plastic Bank pre-funds the collection bonus that is approved in the master order for the plastic collections that have already reached the processors, even before or while any customer orders are created. This ensures that when orders do come in, there is some level of unclaimed collection volumes available for immediate order fulfillment. The order is then transferred to the buyer’s impact account after completing the plastic credit authentication and assignment process.

Bonus program eligibility

A bonus-eligible transaction is any transaction that:

  • is initiated by a certified collection branch in our bonus program
  • starts with a bonus-eligible collection member
  • includes a material type that is also selected as bonus-eligible in the platform
  • does not exceed the collection member’s monthly bonus limit (which is the maximum amount of bonus they can receive each month)

Each kilogram of material that meets these criteria will be bonus-eligible up to the monthly limit for each collection member as long as its transaction passes our internal authentication process.

Collection members

Collection community members must be 18 years or older. Any member under 18 through our school programs is not bonus-eligible and does not participate in Plastic Credit generation. Branch and processor staff must be set up as staff members. Staff members are automatically not bonus-eligible. Collection community members’ full names, verified ages, proper photos, and mobile numbers with E-wallet or verified direct deposit account are required for bonus eligibility after ID verification. No member app user may have more than one registered account in the app. Accidental duplicate accounts will be merged together or deleted. Users who create fake or duplicate accounts for fraud shall be suspended. Outliers, with larger-than-average collection delivery volumes, are investigated and verified as approved outliers. Any participant after the first collection source in the chain must be set up as a Branch.

Suspension rules

In the unfortunate event that a registered member is found, after a thorough investigation, to be involved in unethical practices as defined in the table below, membership is suspended.

CaseDescription
Fraudulent accountFictitious names, photos, and other details to create false identity, pretending to be a member of Plastic Bank. Duplicate accounts. One member should have only one account.
Branch relativeAny relative up to the second degree of consanguinity to the owner must not be allowed to be a member of the branch.
Outlier confirmed to be a small branchA small branch that is not willing to be a partner branch. If however the branch owner is willing to be a partner branch, bonus eligibility must be disabled as branch owner.
Compliance issueMembers who do not submit a photo after a given deadline. Members with invalidated transactions – high volume / multiple transactions per day that are not justified.

Collection branch, aggregators, and processors

Plastic Bank’s certified collection branches, aggregators, and processors are given access to a variety of benefits like Training and Development, Business Coaching, Revenue Share and other necessary support to perform their roles competently and confidently. All registered partners complete a formal onboarding program where they are required to complete the following:

  • Signed Memorandum of Agreement, Accomplished Vendor Application Form, Plastic Bank Code of Conduct, Plastic Bank Commitment to Prevention of Child and Forced Labor, Accomplished Annex 1 Questionnaire on Health and Safety Practices, Accomplished Annex 2 Questionnaire on Technical Capacities and capabilities (for processors)
  • Submission of the following legal and/or economic inclusion requirements specific to each country’s local requirements
  • Collection Branch: Commercial registration, tax card, owner’s national ID, or if not applicable only the owner’s mobile number with an e-wallet or direct deposit account.
  • Aggregators: Commercial registration, tax card, owner’s national ID and bank account, or mobile number with an e-wallet or a direct deposit account.
  • Processor: Commercial registration, tax card, owner’s national ID and bank account.
  • Health and Safety Certification like Global Recycled Standard or equivalent (for processors).
  • Attendance to onboarding training sessions which cover Plastic Bank Procedures, Policies, Standards and Guidelines, Collection Benefits and FAQ. Free business planning, and first aid can also be provided to help improve the partner’s business operations and increase its income.
  • Distribution of personal protective equipment, where supported.

While Plastic Bank conducts periodic audits for data integrity and process compliance, the branch receiving the collected plastic from the collection community member is responsible for maintaining accurate records and transactions in the app reflecting the correct volume, plastic type, and assigning to the correct collection member. The actual weight indicated on the scale must be visible to the collection member upon weighing of the plastic delivery.

Collection branches and aggregators that deliver to processors reconcile the collection volumes with the delivery volumes to the processor through a verified receipt inputted into the app. The final number is the one reported by the processor which must match the information on the uploaded receipt.

Plastic collection process

Plastic exchange

The certified collection branch records its transactions in the PlasticBank® app. The branch selects the 18+ age-verified collection member’s account, then separates and weighs the plastic by type and colour. The transaction concludes by paying the market rate for the collected plastic. The collection member receives the cash value for the market rate of the materials directly from the collection branch.

Collection branches deliver plastic to our certified processor partners. The processor records its purchases in the app and pays the market rate to the collection branch. The processor cleans the collected plastic and processes the plastic as post-consumer recycled (PCR) feedstock for reintegration into the global manufacturing supply chain.

Registration and recording

Collection branches are trained to use the app to register and age-verify collection members, update the market rate for each material type, and record transactions from members by weight and material type. Partner processors are also trained to use the app to update the market rate for each material type, record transactions from collection branches by weight and material type, and upload a receipt that matches the app transaction in weight, material and price.

Plastic Bank transaction verification

The Plastic Bank transaction auditor automatically reviews every transaction recorded in the system for any signs of fraud or errors. This ensures that all data entered into the system is authenticated and verified. Only transactions that have been confirmed by the transaction auditor will become plastic credits.

All registered transactions are verified daily by Plastic Bank to check for:

  • Accuracy of plastic volumes transferred from collection member to branch and/or aggregator, and finally to the processor
  • Market price discrepancies
  • Possible frauds
  • Possible errors

Common flagged transaction errors are those with the same volume on the same day, sold transactions to processors without receipt, and sudden spike of collection per member or per branch. An incident ticket is raised with complete information including why the transaction is suspicious. We employ all safeguards to prevent changing or voiding transactions after being assigned to a client. All ticket records must be complete and available for audit-readiness.

Voiding a transaction is only allowed by Plastic Bank staff when the wrong amount of plastic, by error or fraud, is entered into the platform, or when the wrong amount paid is entered into a transaction. In this case the app user is immediately notified. All void transaction records must be complete and available for audit-readiness. The void feature is only available to Plastic Bank’s internal auditing and order fulfilment team. A transaction voided by Plastic Bank staff for accidental error is replaced with a correcting entry by the branch or processor when applicable.

Processor receipt verifier

The Plastic Bank processor receipt verifier ensures that the photo of the physical receipt the processor uploaded into the PlasticBank® app upon completing their purchase of the materials from the collection branch matches the material volumes and prices that they entered into the PlasticBank® app. Processor receipt verification is the final step in completing the plastic chain from member to processor, and a Plastic Bank staff member confirms the proof of recycling for a valid plastic credit.

If the name of the receipt does not match the recorded collection branch or the volume recorded, this will trigger an investigation and communication with the branch for resolution and further training to prevent the issue from recurring. Plastic Bank’s bonus disbursement system unlocks the digital tokens upon successful verification of delivery to the processor for bonus-eligible materials. Every exchange has a unique claim ID to prevent double impact counting. Plastic Bank’s order management system assigns ownership of the exchanges to each partner’s order. Partners gain access to their orders’ audit trail through their Impact Account.

Plastic Bank’s plastic credit authenticator

The Plastic Bank plastic credit authenticator ensures that a plastic credit is only generated after it has met all of our required conditions to become an authenticated plastic credit. This includes evidence of an additional digital bonus paid to a verified collection member above the market rate, as a demonstration of social additionality. It also confirms that the path of the material that generated the plastic credit can be traced from the collection member to our collection branches, and our partner processors. A verified purchase receipt provides proof of recycling.

Collection Bonus Delivery System

Once the system has a complete plastic chain from the collection member to the processor, that plastic chain is queued for approval during our bonus payment cycles.

The PlasticBank bonus payment system utilizes a FIFO (first in first out) payment system. This system is a queue of bonuses ready to be paid. Once we select the matching amount and pay it, the bonus is paid out through a direct token transfer to the member’s Plastic Bank wallet and is no longer visible in the queue. The successful payment of a bonus via tokens to a member’s wallet using our FIFO approval system authenticates the plastic credit. There is no plastic credit without the authenticated bonus payment that delivers tokens to a member’s wallet. The transaction that earned those tokens is the plastic credit.

All collection branch and aggregator collection tokens are automatically reconciled in the platform against all member collection tokens. This verifies the absence of discrepancies ensuring correct bonus payment.

Plastic Bank controls budgeting processes and maintains consistent expectations of earnings through an automatic monthly bonus limit that is adjustable by community and order type. Our monthly bonus limits are customized to our unique business needs and can ensure that every bonus-eligible collection member receives a bonus up to the monthly bonus limit assigned to them in the platform.

Once the bonus is approved for payment, it is automatically delivered to the collection member’s and branch owner’s digital wallets in the form of tokens.

Token cash out

A token cash out is when a collection member or branch owner redeems the tokens in their Plastic Bank digital wallet for local currency through a direct bank transfer or local e-wallet transfer. When either process takes place, the tokens redeemed are transferred back to Plastic Bank and retired in the system.

Standards:

  • All bonuses must be paid in tokens through a direct token deposit to a member’s wallet.
  • Members must meet the legal age requirement of 18 years and above to be bonus-eligible.
  • Bonus-eligible exchanges must be recorded in the app with accurate weights and prices.
  • Any member who is suspended or selected as “not bonus-eligible” for any reason will not be bonus-eligible.
  • For pending bonuses to be approved and transferred to the members’ wallet, they must have passed our “no fraud” or error verification process and must have a complete plastic chain from the bonus-paid member to an approved processor in the PlasticBank® app.
  • Bonuses will be disqualified if they do not have a completed plastic chain with proof of delivery to the processor within 90 days from the initial transaction date.
  • All members must be fully compliant with our Code of Conduct to be bonus-eligible.

Key requirements for collection members and branches eligibility:

  • Verified phone number: Plastic Bank collection members must have a verified phone number to be eligible for our bonus programs and plastic credit authentication. The verification process is done within the app by sending a text message code to their phone, which is authenticated in the app.
  • Local e-wallet / direct deposit: In addition to a verified phone number, all members and branch owners must have a connected e-wallet with the matching phone number or a verified direct deposit account to be bonus-eligible. This process provides guaranteed proof of delivery for social impact through our bonus program and further validates that the member is already authenticated through our third-party partners.

Token standards

Across all countries without exception, Plastic Bank ensures that:

  • Every token is equal to 0.01 USD, based on the current FX rate stated in the platform, for each country.
  • Token value can only be transferred to a member’s e-wallet or bank account, whichever is more feasible, through the Plastic Bank token transfer system.
  • Tokens can’t be bought through an exchange or secondary market. They must be earned through recycling transactions and system-approved actions. They are loyalty/reward tokens with a guaranteed redeemable value in our private network.
  • A 7-token member bonus for bonus-eligible collection members is the default member bonus rate. This allows for the additional financing of branch bonuses for each participant in the plastic chain from member to processor ranging from 0.01 to 0.03 USD per KG per branch.
  • Our bonus payment must be on top of the local market rate. We monitor and prevent branches and processors from dropping the market rate because of the bonus payment the member will receive. Any drop in the market rate due to the bonus decrease will falsify our promise of verified livelihood improvements through social additionality.

Impact certificates

Plastic Bank guarantees collection and provides individual and business subscribers who make online plastic credit purchases with impact certificates via their impact account. Monthly subscription users will automatically receive a new impact certificate each month, validating impact delivery in real-time. The fulfillment of subscription orders will be done through periodic bulk plastic credit fulfillments through the platform that combines all impact orders into one master impact order for that time frame. The impact will be deposited to their account immediately upon purchase or monthly subscription renewal. Every plastic credit is equivalent to one kilogram of materials collected which is the equivalent of 50 500ml PET plastic bottles on your dashboard.

Impact account order fulfillment confirmation

Personal and professional impact accounts automatically generate a guaranteed impact certificate immediately after each subscription or one-time payment. Each impact certificate is visible in the users’ impact certificate section. The personal and professional impact account dashboard shows a calculation of all impact certificates of the user to date. Each impact certificate contains a unique ID number, which guarantees no double counting within Plastic Bank’s plastic credit fulfillment process. One-time purchases and subscription orders for personal and professional accounts are fulfilled in bulk for the selected time period.

Impact Hub for enterprise partners is directly connected to each individual purchase order and recurring payments. Plastic Bank creates a unique order matching the order due date and order volumes with a new impact program bonus order in the Plastic Bank platform by transferring the authenticated plastic credits from Plastic Bank’s regional master order to the unique order created for the plastic credit delivery to that enterprise. As soon as the unique order is added to each client’s Impact Hub, it will automatically update the impact summary, audit trail, and locations map. Plastic Bank conducts periodic internal audits to verify all orders. To maintain ongoing collections in our communities without disruption, Plastic Bank will typically pre-pay for collection bonuses in advance to create a target level of Plastic Credit stock. Plastic Bank will assign the unique ownership of the pre-paid stock to the purchasing Enterprise Account based on the scheduled payment date stated in the contract. When no stock is available, real-time Plastic Credit generation will occur per order based on the scheduled payment dates.

Internal Audits

Plastic Bank’s Global Data & Customer Excellence team verifies the data in each country. Plastic Bank conducts auditing routines using our system according to a set of standards including traceability and Code of Conduct compliance.
