Plastic Bank’s Partnership with Henkel

Expanding Recycling Ecosystems Around The World while Promoting Sustainable Packaging Solutions

We’re proud to be partnering with Henkel to expand recycling ecosystems around the world while promoting sustainable packaging solutions. Henkel takes a long-term, entrepreneurial approach toward all elements of sustainability. As the first major global consumer goods company to partner with Plastic Bank, Henkel is leading their industry by shaping new standards. Since the beginning of our partnership, Henkel has helped to collect over 750,000 kg of plastic waste through its ecosystem in Haiti, preventing over 37.5 million plastic bottles from entering the ocean (see below for most recent impact metrics).

In 2017, Henkel helped to establish our first recycling ecosystem in Haiti. Together, we built five collection branches, setting the stage for Plastic Bank’s expansion around the world. Building on our partnership, we are expanding our recycling ecosystem into Egypt. Henkel is helping to establish recycling infrastructure which will help collect 5,000 metric tons of ocean bound plastic per year!

Building a closed-loop supply chain

Henkel has established a closed-loop supply chain, ensuring collected ocean bound plastic can be processed and reintegrated into the value chain as Social Plastic®. In 2020, Henkel is integrating more than 600,000 kg of Social Plastic® into their products, including Pril, Vernel, Fa, and Nature Box brands.

Henkel has received global recognition for their Fa and Nature Box brands, winning the Best in Class Packaging Innovation, Sustainable Design at the PAC Global Leadership Awards in 2020, and the Best Practices Award at the Sustainability Awards in 2019.

Looking Forward

We’re excited to be extending our partnership with Henkel to support ongoing projects in Haiti, the Philippines, and Indonesia. Additionally, Henkel will help expand our recycling ecosystem into Egypt – establishing recycling infrastructure such as plastic collection branches.

The development of the recycling infrastructure in Egypt will help to collect 5,000 metric tons of ocean-bound plastic per year – the equivalent to preventing one billion bottles from entering the ocean over five years.

“Our collaboration with Plastic Bank is a unique partnership, addressing two of the world’s biggest challenges of today: plastic waste and the lack of opportunity for people in need … We are excited to take the next steps – for the environment and a better future for even more people in Haiti, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Egypt.”
