Ocean-bound plastic

Plastic Bank operates under the global standard defined by Jenna Jambeck. Ocean-bound plastic is defined as plastic that has not yet found its way into the ocean but is classified as "mismanaged waste". That is, plastic that is not being (formally) collected, is not likely to be collected, and is found within 50km of an ocean-bound waterway or coastal area.

Community Members

Individuals within a recycling community who collect plastic and exchange it at a Plastic Bank collection branch for secure income and life-improving benefits.

Equivalent Bottles Stopped

The amount of ocean-bound plastic collected and recycled in our recycling communities converted into bottles. Conversion rate is 50 bottles per kg (the average weight of a 500mL bottle is ~20g)

Recycling Communities

Community of plastic collectors living within 50 kilometres of ocean-bound waterways involved in plastic collection and its exchange at Plastic Bank collection points.

Alchemy

Alchemy is the blockchain platform that powers the Plastic Bank app. It enables fully traceable recycling processes, secures income for recycling community members and tailors impact reports for our stewards.

Plastic Bank’s Partnership with SC Johnson

Plastic Bank’s partnership with SC Johnson expands to professional markets

The SCJ Professional® Proline WAVE 1 litre soap dispenser has many benefits to make it a great choice for facilities that care about sustainability and want a reliable solution for their busy washrooms.

The SCJ Professional® Proline WAVE 1 litre washroom soap dispenser is made with 70% recovered coastal plastic, sourced from a global partnership between SC Johnson and Plastic Bank.

Recovered coastal plastic is post-consumer recycled plastic collected on land within 31 miles / 50 km of an ocean so that it reach oceans or landfills, in countries with high volumes of uncollected plastic waste. Each dispenser is the equivalent of 16 x 500ml recovered coastal plastic waste plastic bottles.

SCJ Professional® Proline WAVE 1 litre soap dispenser was first launched in UK in Nov’22 and has launched successively since then across countries in North America, APAC and Europe.

Together we can help stop plastic waste reaching the oceans or landfills

Eight million metric tonnes of plastic reach the world’s oceans every year, equating to a rubbish truck full of plastic being dumped into the ocean every minute³. This is an issue around the world and SC Johnson Professional’s new soap dispenser is a further opportunity to reuse plastic waste that otherwise was bound for the ocean or landfills.
