Another summer has come and gone! This year we’re celebrating a summer of positive and lasting environmental, social and economic impact for our oceans, our communities and the world. We began this summer by celebrating our collection milestone of more than 1 billion bottles of ocean plastic - that’s over 20 million kilograms of plastic waste. This summer, we crossed two milestones sooner than we expected. Globally, we broke our monthly collection record with over 100 million bottles of ocean plastic collected in June alone. Our collector community in Egypt picked their 100 millionth bottle of ocean plastic last month since the opening of our first branch in November last year!

To date, we collected over 31 million kilograms of plastic waste, which is equivalent to more than 1.5 billion bottles of ocean plastic. Together with our partners, we’re empowering over 17,000 collectors in communities in Haiti, the Philippines, Indonesia, Brasil and Egypt to collect and exchange plastic waste for bonuses that help to provide basic family necessities.

Bashay Shawky is a father and Plastic Bank collector in Cairo, Egypt. In the afternoons, Bashay collects discarded plastic that is bound for the Nile and seas in exchange for bonuses that help provide basic family necessities. Thanks to his work with Plastic Bank, Bashay has been able to support his children's education and help his oldest daughter get married.
