Indonesia

Supported by SC Johnson

In 2018, we opened our first Indonesian branch in Bali as part of an 8 location partnership with SC Johnson. Since then we have partnered with existing business, schools, and processors to activate over 100 collection points in Bali and have expanded to other islands.

SUPPORT OUR WORK IN INDONESIA

Indonesia is the world’s largest island country, with more than 17,000 islands and a population over 260 million. The 2018 Environmental Performance Index ranked Indonesia at 133 out of 180 countries and some estimates suggest that the archipelago is the source of around 10 per cent of the world’s plastic waste.

The Need is Great

Bali is part of the Coral Triangle, the area with the highest biodiversity of marine species in the world and is the centre of tourism for Indonesia.  In late 2017 Balinese officials declared a “garbage emergency” in response to the covering of a 3.6 mile stretch of coastline in plastic waste brought in by the tide sparking concerns that the pollution could dissuade visitors from returning.

LOCAL APP PARTNERS

We work with local partners including cooperative banks and stores where our collectors can easily redeem saved tokens earned from collecting plastic waste for cash or products. This eliminates the risk of carrying cash and gives collectors an opportunity to save.

Network completed ahead of schedule!

We opened the last of our 8 locations funded by SC Johnson two months ahead of schedule! With 7 collection centres in the densely populated area around Denpasar in the south we provide easy accessibility to hundreds of thousands of collectors and home owners. Our 8th location is mobile and can turn up at events and markets to raise awareness and stop ocean plastic.
