Indonesia is the world’s largest island country, with more than 17,000 islands and a population over 260 million. The 2018 Environmental Performance Index ranked Indonesia at 133 out of 180 countries and some estimates suggest that the archipelago is the source of around 10 per cent of the world’s plastic waste.
The Need is Great
Bali is part of the Coral Triangle, the area with the highest biodiversity of marine species in the world and is the centre of tourism for Indonesia. In late 2017 Balinese officials declared a “garbage emergency” in response to the covering of a 3.6 mile stretch of coastline in plastic waste brought in by the tide sparking concerns that the pollution could dissuade visitors from returning.
