A GROWING ECOSYSTEM
With the support of partners like Henkel and Shell, Plastic Bank has opened 32 Branches in 5 regions of Haiti since we opened our first location in 2014. We also continue to expand our network of collection points run by partners such as schools and other community organizations. With over 70 already open, demand continues to open new regions!
The map below shows our Branches as of November 2018.
A partnership with Expo2020 supports our outreach programs.
Our team educates students on recycling and other environmental issues and schools can collect plastic waste from their students and communities which helps fund their education.
This partnership is crucial in a country with a literacy rate of 61% and helps children stay in school longer.
Branches as community hubs
All of our Branches in Haiti are equipped with solar powered lights. Sometimes we offer the only light and reliable electricity in the area so students come to read, children to play, and parents supervise in the evenings.
Plastic waste can also be exchanged for charging cell phones and it is common to see children dropping off their parents phones on the way to school. Expanding basic infrastructure like this creates hope and opportunities in the most disadvantaged areas.
Supports the UN SDG'S
Our work in Haiti directly meets 14 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals and indirectly meets the remaining 3. The SDG’s are an important evolution of the Millennium Development Goals adding recognition for the environment and climate change.
